The Fiat 124 Spider died 30 years ago, but like Superman and Dracula, it was too awesome to stay dead. Now it’s back, in a return that’s bringing a lot of buzz to the 2017 auto season. But what’s the machine behind the buzz? Let’s take a look:
Good idea, start with the basics. The Fiat 124 Spider is a front-engine, 2 passenger, 2 door convertible with rear-wheel-drive.
The Fiat 124 Spider’s engine is a 1.4 liter turbocharged, intercooled SOHC 16 valve inline4 with an iron block, aluminum head, and port fuel injection. It’s a Fiat 500 Abarth with a bit more ‘pop.’
22 psi of boost comes in handy. Expect 160 horsepower once you hit 5500 rpm. Expect 184 lb-ft of torque once you hit 2500 rpm. The Fiat 124 Spider comes in three versions. The ‘Abarth’ version squeezes out four more horses, same amount of torque. 5500 to 6500 rpm is just decoration, since you’re losing thrust. The Miata – the car this Fiat most resembles -WILL hand you your lunch above 5500 rpm.
Your transmission is 6 speed manual, 6 speed automatic with manual shifting mode. A small detail, you say? Well, it does come with cool picture of your Fiat 124 Spider!
It’s a mighty mouse, which is what a Fiat ought to be. Length, 159.6 inches; Width, 68.5 inches; Height, 48.5 inches, Wheelbase, 90.9 inches.
How About The Interior?
The Spider’s Passenger Volume is 49 cubic feet. Its Cargo volume is 5 cubic feet. Style? Check it out, check it out!
How About Another Look?
Sure. Bottom line, this vehicle is for you and your honey. The kids and the dog will have to get their own Fiat Spiders.
A Little More Vroom Vroom?
Zero to 60 mph in 6.2 to 6.6 seconds, depending;
The EPA says it’s better than you might expect: for city driving, 25-26 mpg, and 35-36 mpg on the highway.
And The Price?
Much better than you’d expect. Again, the Fiat 124 Spider comes in three versions. The ‘Classica’ starts at $25,990. The ‘Lusso’ starts at $28,490. The ‘Abarth’ starts at $29,190.
Does It Come In Black?
